Saving Wildlife Habitat for Future Generations

Earth's population is growing at an astounding rate. The 6.6 billion of us who now call this planet home are encroaching every day on the habitat of wildlife.

Efforts are being made by conservation groups to protect habitat for the creatures that wander through our dense forests, crawl along the floor of Earth's deserts and inhabit the trees of dense equatorial  jungles. These groups are made up of sportsmen and women and of conservationists whose only goal is to save the Earth from man's encroaching hand.

Each group, however, has the same goal in mind–conserving the open spaces. Having been raised in the North Woods of northern Minnesota, I learned a valuable lesson early on in my life. My grandfather homesteaded land that he purchased from the Lake Superior Band of Chippewa Ojibway Indians. As a boy, I roamed freely between three lakes and a creek that were within a mile of our farmhouse.

As I grew in stature, my sphere of exploration widened until I wandered through every swale, over every ravine and up countless draws in an effort to claim in my mind the lands that were home. It was through years of camping, fishing and canoeing these acres and acres of heavily forested lands that I gained an appreciation for the natural beauty these woods possess. It was as a youth that I recognized the need to work with other outdoorsmen and women to preserve the hinterlands that I enjoyed.

Time has passed since those dreamy boyhood days, but the efforts to preserve those acres and others is timeless. Hopefully, Wildlife Art magazine and its plethora of the world’s greatest wildlife artists will inspire many of you to engage in the multitude of efforts to preserve the habitat that is home to this planet’s creatures.

Many great conservation groups exist. You will find most of them listed on the Web site of the Worldwide Nature Artists Group—a collection of artists devoted to the promotion of nature art and worldwide conservation. Their site is rich with conservation information of interest to all those who love the natural world.

Preserving the wildlands that are home to the world's creatures will enhance humanity's position as its caretaker. We all enjoy the vast open spaces and forested lands of Earth. As we engage in roaming these lands, let's do everything we can to pass along the vision to those generations that will follow.
